Housed in a honey gold case, an exclusive offering from A. Lange & Söhne, the new Zeitwerk model chimes the time in an original manner: every hour and every ten minutes, with a low-pitched note for the former, and a high-pitched note for the latter. When the striking mechanism is activated by the dedicated 4 o’clock pusher, one can observe the dial hammers in action, engraved with a ‘tremblé’ zigzag produced as if with a trembling hand. Like all the models in the collection launched in 2009, the Zeitwerk Decimal Strike is a mechanical watch displaying the jumping hours and minutes, small seconds and a remarkably legible power reserve. A patented escapement guarantees that the balance wheel is driven with constant force throughout the entire running duration. Through the back of this 100- piece limited edition, one may admire a movement built and decorated in the signature house style, notably featuring a three-quarter plates adorned with Glashütte stripes and a hand-engraved balance bridge.

The dial facet has lots of other treats for the onlooker, namely people linked to the perpetual calendar as well as also the rattrapante chronograph. The former is composed of 206 parts, almost a third of their 684 total element count of the L133.1 standard. Lange’s moon stage is “accurate to 122.6 years” — mind you, that “precision” means that it takes that much time for the moon phase display to be off by a complete moment. This form of arbitrary way is how the accuracy of moon phase displays in watches is usually ascertained, not that anybody actually cares about real usefulness beyond its own aesthetic and engineering element. The rattrapante chronograph on the other hand is one of the most technically impressive and hard complications on the market. A few watchmakers I asked told me that they find it more challenging to perform than a sonnerie or moment repeater, and definitely a much bigger pain in the neck compared to a perpetual calendar (unless it is instantaneous and/or further complicated). Both laser sharp chronograph seconds hands break a hair’s width over one another in their own reset place, with the blue being the rattrapante hand, operated by the pusher in the 10 o’clock position of the case.
